Reset and uninstall

From the gentlest step to the most thorough. Quit Minecraft before any of them, and back up worlds you care about first.

The data folder is %APPDATA%\Xol on Windows and ~/Library/Application Support/Xol on macOS. Settings ▸ Support ▸ About shows the exact path. See File locations.

Repair an instance

Settings ▸ Instance ▸ Repair restores every file Xol installed and leaves your files alone. Try this first. See Instances.

Reset the client settings of one instance

In game: expand a module in the settings screen and press Reset settings, or Reset position; the HUD editor has Reset all for positions.

For everything at once, close the game and delete xol/config.json inside the instance folder. The client starts with defaults: only FPS on, one layout named "Default". To keep a copy of your settings first, use Export under General and move xol/xol-settings.json somewhere safe.

Reset an instance's video settings

Pick another performance preset and press Play; presets are applied when the choice changes. For a full reset of Minecraft's options, close the game and delete options.txt in the instance folder. The game writes a fresh one, and the current preset is merged into it the next time the preset changes. Your key bindings are in that file too.

Fully reset an instance

  1. Close the game.
  2. Open Settings ▸ Instance ▸ Open folder ▸ Instance folder.
  3. Copy saves, screenshots and resourcepacks somewhere safe if you want to keep them.
  4. Go up one folder and delete the instance's folder, for example instances/xol-1.8.9.
  5. Press Play. Xol creates the instance again from the profile.

An imported OptiFine file lives inside the instance, so you need to import it again. The shared game files (versions, libraries, assets, Java) are not inside the instance and are not downloaded again.

A gentler alternative: clone the instance first and experiment on the clone.

Reset launcher settings

Quit Xol and delete launcher.json in the data folder. Profile choice, preset, memory, window size, custom Java, JVM arguments, instance choices, the diagnostics switch and the automatic-update switch return to their defaults. Accounts, the access key and instances are separate files and are not affected.

Remove the saved sign-in or access key

Uninstall on Windows

  1. Settings ▸ Apps ▸ Installed apps, find Xol, choose Uninstall. If there are two entries (why), remove both.
  2. That removes the program only. Every instance, world and setting is still in %APPDATA%\Xol.
  3. For a complete removal, first copy any saves you want to keep, then delete %APPDATA%\Xol. Paste the path into File Explorer's address bar to get there.

Uninstall on macOS

  1. Quit Xol and drag it from Applications to the Trash.
  2. That removes the program only. Everything else is still in ~/Library/Application Support/Xol.
  3. For a complete removal, first copy any saves you want to keep, then delete that folder. In Finder choose Go ▸ Go to Folder… and paste the path.

A hidden folder named .Xol-old-….app or .Xol-update-….app next to Xol is a leftover of the self-updater. Xol removes them itself at its next start; after uninstalling you can delete them by hand.

What a complete removal covers

Everything Xol itself writes is in the data folder: instances, downloaded game files, settings, the verified installers, and the sealed sign-in and access key (accounts.json, service.json). Deleting the folder deletes all of it.

Two things are outside Xol's reach:

  • The operating system's secure store may keep the encryption key entry it created for Xol. It protects nothing once the files are gone.
  • At Microsoft, Xol's permission stays until you revoke it at the link above.

Xol's own material does not list any other location, so none is claimed here. The operating system may keep its usual per-application records, such as window state or preferences.
